about the book
Released April 2015 …
As I’ve crisscrossed the globe, both for business and for pleasure, places of divine power have always intrigued me, drawn me, and led me into inspiration and adventure. From the mighty red rocks of Petra, Jordan, to the fury of the Hawaiian volcanoes, to the religious fervor of Varanasi, India, I’ve long been compelled to explore and portray such awe-inspiring divinity through my writing and my artwork. My experiences—ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, the prosaic to the frightening, the mundane to the enlightening—find their way into my book Rambles into Sacred Realms: Journeys in Pen and Paint.
Each chapter includes an essay about a particular site and several pieces of my artwork, executed in a variety of mediums including watercolor, scratchboard, acrylics, pencil, and pastel. Each piece of artwork is accompanied by a caption highlighting the essence of the moment that inspired the drawing. And finally, each chapter concludes with a short section of useful tips for the prospective traveler.
Under the suspicious glares of gun-toting Israeli soldiers, I struggled to keep my brush steady as I worked on a hurried watercolor of the Western Wall. When painting the tree-strangled shrines of Ta Prohm in Cambodia, a cobra suddenly slithered across my path, startling me so badly I splattered my palette all over my impeccable beige trousers. At the spectacular shrine of Preah Vihear along the Thai border, I was chased away by the staccato of guerilla gunfire and somehow got both myself and all my art paraphernalia—which I was determined not to jettison!—into a rickety all-terrain truck that ferried me to safety. Pastels in hand, I was serenely sketching an exquisite temple in Sukhothai when out of nowhere a pack of feral dogs materialized—the bolder ones gnashing their teeth and nipping at my heels till an unwary jogger diverted their attention.
Rambles into Sacred Realms offers a compelling invitation to the reader to vicariously enjoy the adventure, the drama, and the humor illuminating my travels, as well as an opportunity to experience through the perspective of my words and images the stunning power of these incredible places. And who knows? Perhaps they’ll inspire readers to seek out their own places of awe and connection—near or far. Perhaps they’ll look to capture their own experiences using art, prose, photographs, poetry, or other forms of meaningful personal expression.
